The Governor of the Bank of the Republic of Burundi (BRB) participated in 2025 International Monetary Fund (IMF)and World Bank Annual Meetings
On the sidelines of the 2025 International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Annual Meetings, Edouard Normand BIGENDAKO, Governor of the Bank of the Republic of Burundi (BRB) delivered a compelling intervention on behalf of the Governors and Ministers of the Africa Group III Constituency, which comprises 17 Sub-Saharan African countries, during the IMFC meetings. The IMFC is the IMF’s core decision-making body that brings together global economic leaders to guide its strategic direction and policy priorities. Governor BIGENDAKO highlighted the acute challenges facing low-income countries, particularly in Africa, amid heightened global uncertainty, narrowing fiscal space, and declining official development assistance. Emphasizing the disproportionate impact of global trade tensions and rising protectionism, he called for continued multilateral cooperation, faster debt restructuring, and expanded concessional financing through Multilateral Development Banks. He further stressed the importance of safeguarding central bank independence, strengthening oversight of non-bank financial institutions and digital assets, and advancing bold structural reforms to unlock private-sector-led growth.
